This 7inch 45 RPM single is a fantastic and faithful reproduction of the incredibly popular and hard-to-find TEST PRESSING single "Baby I" and "That's What You Get."
This was the first original song Bruce ever wrote and recorded with his high school band, the Castiles, on May 18, 1966.
Springsteen was only 16 when the song was recorded.
Over the years, he has fondly recalled those early days in a band named after a popular shampoo brand.
Springsteen and his Castiles partner, George Theiss, wrote "Baby I" together. They recorded it in a recording booth at the Mr. Music Inc. store in the Brick Mall in Bricktown, New Jersey.
It was the first time Springsteen had recorded his own vocals and guitar. The session was rudimentary; the studio was tiny, and the engineer had the musicians point their amplifiers at the wall to muffle the sound.
That day, the Castiles recorded two songs: "Baby I" and "That's What You Get."
"Baby I" has a heavy, fast garage rock sound typical of the 1960s. The lyrics reflect the simple ache of teenage love.
The band received an acetate record that was spinning on a turntable. It was an emotional moment for the young musicians to hear their music being played back. Only seven or eight test copies were made from that session.
