Are These Diamonds Really A Girl’s Best Friend?

A kiss on the hand
May be quite continental,
But diamonds are a girl’s best friend.

Hey guys? Do you have a sweetheart who you want to marry and you’re getting ready to buy a rock and pop the question? And you gals? Are you hoping that you get a really big rock to wear on your left hand – maybe a diamond the size of the Ritz?

Well, you might want to take some time before you buy an engagement diamond (or a diamond for any other purpose or occasion) to find out exactly where that sparkling stone comes from. There is a news story today out of Harare, Zimbabwe, claiming merchants in that country have begun selling hundreds of thousands of carats of rough diamonds. These new “blood diamonds” come from an area where human rights workers say soldiers have killed more than 200 people, raped woman and forced children into hard labor camps.

Sorry to kill your buzz.

Men grow cold
As girls grow old,
And we all lose our charms in the end.

But square-cut or pear-shaped,
These rocks don’t lose their shape.
Diamonds are a girl’s best friend.

Armed police and soldiers packing more heat than the local group of gang bangers, stood by at the main airport in Harare this week, while a phalanx of private jets from Russia, India, Israel and Lebanon touched down to try to get their greedy little hands on the 900,000 carats of new blood diamonds put up for sale.

A monitor in Zimbabwe for the world diamond control body says these diamonds harvested from the now-infamous Marange diamond fields meet minimum international standards. Again, that’s MINIMUM INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS. Members of Human Rights Watch say these diamonds are being taken from areas where, what they call “human slaves” are told to dig or die, and then smuggled out of the Marange fields by soldiers who rape and beat innocent civilians. Meanwhile, these diamonds are mixed into the supply and sold to almost every other nation in the world by merchants who assure customers that the diamonds they buy are not “blood diamonds”

There may come a time
When a hard-boiled employer
Thinks you’re awful nice,
But get that ice or else no dice.

No dice is right. Sooner or later, money always rules the day. Just because Human Rights Watch says it has evidence that children as young as 10 years old are forced to work more than 11 hours a day without any pay or reward, that’s no reason to get upset, right?

Time rolls on,
And youth is gone,
And you can’t straighten up when you bend.

But stiff back
Or stiff knees,
You stand straight at Tiffany’s.

And sooner or later that’s where these billions of dollars of diamonds end up, at Tiffany’s, or some other jewelry store down the block that your family has been going to forever. But take caution, handsome young buck or pretty little dove. You don’t want to end up with blood or death on your hands.

Diamonds! Diamonds!
I don’t mean rhinestones!
But diamonds are a girl’s best friend.
